The Movie Oracle: Tropic Thunder (2008)

The gods are coming back?

Dionysos, god of wine: Yes, we are! Long ago the gods grew weary of man's problems and "outsourced" our duties to upstart religions. But retirement got boring and now we're turning once again to the mortal realm, and finding it a very different world. Where to begin getting in touch with this new culture? With movies, of course!

Athena, goddess of wisdom: And other things. I look out for social issues, Dio for aesthetics. Apollo goes for the intellectual, Ares for action, Hera for family values, and so on. Each god gives their unique view on today's cinema and society.

Tropic Thunder (2008)

Three thumbs up

Eris: Someone dropped an apple of discord onto the set. As these prissy actors attempt to create the illusion of war, they find themselves in a real combat situation yet believe it is all just a movie magic illusion. Ben Stiller and crew also deserve an Eris award for putting up fake web sites and trailers based on characters in the movie. I couldn't have sown more confusion myself. Thumbs up.

Dionysos: The "comedy of errors" is an age-old genre, and Ben Stiller gives it a brilliant new spin. The movie deconstructs the absurdity of acting at every turn. Something about Robert Downey, Jr. playing an Australian playing a black guy who talks like the Jeffersons... What can I say? It has a certain je ne sais quoi. Thumbs up.

Ares: I don't have a clue what Dionysos just said. As for me, I teared up at the sight of the explosions. Reminded me of the good old days of Greek fire. For a fake war movie, it still felt pretty gritty. And I laughed till my sides hurt. Thumbs up.

Tropic Thunder is the story of an attempt to make a Vietnam war movie that goes horribly awry. When the director cannot handle his prima donna actors, he abandons them in the jungle in hopes of getting "real" emotions out of them. But things quickly go wrong. The actors find themselves facing real opponents, while still thinking they haven't left the safe, warm bubble of the movie set.
Director: Ben Stiller

DID YOU KNOW? The philosopher Plato saw no place for artists in his ideal state, because their work is all pretense and illusion.
